MonoGRAF Dimension parameters

Dimension parameters

The manner in which dimensions are drawn is controlled by a set of dimensioning variables. Some of these variables are simply "on/off" switches. After you invoke any dimension command you can select the function "parameters" of control menu and you will see the following dimension parameters submenu:

Dimension parameters

Dimension parameters

You can select a parameter and change its value. The effect of this change is listed below.

Draw text

The basic parameter which allows generation of dimension text is the "Draw text" parameter. In response to the prompt:
"Draw text? [yes]"
the user can prohibit or allow generation and visualization of the dimension text. If the prohibition for the text is carried out before the "Dimension text [...]" message, it is not issued when executing an arbitrary dimensioning command, a dimension text is not generated, and the primitive dimension value in the current command is lost. If the prohibition for the text is carried out after the above message appeared, the text is not drawn, but its value is stored until a new dimension text appears. It is important when drawing extension lines.

Text layout

This parameter is used to specify the placing of the dimension text. The parameter is a key toggle and has values of 0 (off) and 1 (on) and determines if the place of the dimension text will be automatically placed by MonoGRAF (if the value is on), or you will be prompted to specify its position after you enter the dimension text.

Text height

The font dimension for drawing the dimension text is chosen by means of "Text height" parameter. After specifying this parameter, the
"Select text height (0.25...2.00)[0.3]"
message is issued. The font height of the dimension text is chosen in accordance with the standard from the set of values: 0.25; 0.3; 5.0; 7.0; 10.0; 15.0; 20.0. The height of tolerances, if they are different, is assigned a value, which precedes the basic text height value. The user can specify the height by any number of the indicated range, but for the dimension text MonoGRAF will choose a value from the specified set, which is closest to the entered one. The symbol width is calculated according to the standard by the specified height or to the "scale factor" parameter of the "text" function.

Value accuracy

Specifies the number of digits after the decimal point in the dimension text. The allowed number of decimal digits is from 0 to 8.

Draw tolerances

The second parameter which affects the dimension text contents is the "Draw tolerances" parameter. If it is chosen, then the "Draw tolerances? [yes]" prompt is issued. The positive response allows drawing of tolerances. If the given parameter is permitted, then after the "Dimension text [...]" message, the system requests the tolerances values:
"Enter higher tolerance value: [0.00]"
"Enter lower tolerance value: [0.00]"
The values are entered as real numbers. The tolerances with 0.00 values are not drawn, and if the tolerances are equal, they are written on the same line with the basic dimension text with a + sign in accordance with the standard.

Solid dim line

This on/off toggle specifies if you wish the dimension line to be a single line with dimension text placed above it, or to be composed of two lines with the dimension text between them.

Text color

This parameter allows you to specify a different color for the dimension text than the color of the rest of the dimensioning elements. When you select this parameter, you are offered a pop-up menu of all the available colors to chose from.

Scale factor

All element dimensions alterations, including the font dimension, can be carried out through the "Scale factor" parameter. After selection of this parameter the "Scale factor? [1.00]" prompt is issued. This parameter affects all dimensioning parameters having numerical values, i.e., all parameters are multiplied by the scale factor. This parameter is used if the user works with his own length units, not with [cm]. In this case the scale factor should be equal to the number of [cm] in the user's unit. Note. If the alterations of the above described parameters are realized before issuing the
"Dimension text [...]"
, they will affect the result of the current command execution. If the alterations are entered after the indicated message, they will affect the result of the next command execution.

First & second extension

If it is not desirable for you to draw one or two extension lines, you may change the default value for the parameter "First extension" and/or "Second extension" via the "params" function of the control menu. You are prompted:
"First extension line? [yes]"
and/or
"Second extension line? [yes]"
The default parameter value is written in brackets. The answer "no" prohibits the generation of the extension line.

Dimension line type

Selects the dimension line type as one of the following:

Line after arrow

The line segment after an arrow may vary from 1 to 5 mm as permits the standard. After choosing the parameter: "Line after arrow", the message:
"Enter length of line after arrowhead (0.10...0.50) [0.20]"
is issued, and a possibility for alteration of parameter within the permissible limits according to the standard (default length is 2 mm) is provided.

Incr of dim line

When using the "baseline" command the step between dimension lines is determined through the "Incr of dim line" parameter. In response to the message:
"Select increment of dimension line (0.60..1.00) [0.60]"
it is necessary to enter a real number or to confirm the accepted default value (6 mm) by simply pressing the Enter key.

Leader type

When you select this parameter, you can select the different types of leader lines:

Dim value shape

This parameter allows you to select either a line, above which will be places the leader text, or a rectangle, within which will be placed the leader text.

Tick length

If necessary, you can replace the dimension line arrow with "tick" through the "tick length" parameter. After the prompt:
"Select tick length [0.00]"
you must enter a real number, which specifies the tick length. When the parameter value is 0.0, dimension lines are generated with arrows.

Error messages

The user can, during the dimensioning process, create a situation, when the chosen command can not for some reason be executed. In this case MonoGRAF issues error message and revokes the command.

The following messages may be issued in a dimensioning mode:
  • "Function not applicable to selected object" - this message appears when the specified dimensioning type is not applicable to the indicated primitives type, for example:
    • "center", "diameter", "radius" commands for line;
    • "angle" command for arc or circle;
    • "horizontal" command for vertical lines, etc.
The user should carefully check which object is marked as a current object in all cases when this message appears on the screen.

  • The message "No base or chain beginning" is issued, if at first invoking of the "baseline" or "chain" functions, a linear dimensioning has not been executed by "horizontal", "vertical" or "parallel" functions.

  • The "Elements coincide" message informs the user that elements with equal coordinates are indicated, for example, the same point for beginning of the first and second extension lines, etc.

Special symbols

During dimensioning the user may need symbols for dimension text, not existing on the keyboard. The most often used symbols (only in the dimensioning mode!) are:
  • tolerance symbol corresponds to symbol $;

  • diameter symbol corresponds to symbol @.

  • degree symbol corresponds to symbol ^.
